Kunsthall – Art & Heritage in Flanders is an imaginary arts hall, a visual rollercoaster showing recent work by artists active in Flanders and beyond. It should be seen as an exercise in trying to programme all the artistic actions of the past five years in the same arts hall. Without any wall panels. So what do you see? A surprising and astonishing arsenal of images by artists who find worldwide recognition with their work. The question however is whether or not this arts hall is so imaginary after all. These cultural activities were not all gathered together in an actual building, but they do however connect with Flanders, an insignificantly small region on the scale of the world map. Because of its limited area – museums, theatres, libraries and concert halls are never more than an hour's drive away – Flanders is a kind of ideal arts hall. Hardly anyhere else in the world is the power and identity of creative productivity so great in proportion to the region in which it comes into being.
