Modernism. Belgian Abstract Art and Europe (1912-1930)

For the first time Belgium’s historical avant-garde is illustrated through visual and applied art, architecture, typography, photography, films, music, literature and theatre in the exhibition Modernism. Belgian Abstract Art and Europe (1912-1930).

Belgian protagonists like Marthe Donas, Jozef Peeters, Jules Schmalzigaug, Victor Servranckx and Georges Vantongerloo will be juxtaposed with foreign contemporaries like László Moholy-Nagy, Vassily Kandinsky, Fernand Léger, Kurt Schwitters and Theo Van Doesburg. A number of large international museums are loaning works for this exhibition.

Irina Davidovici gives a lecture on 'Forms of Practice', her awarded dissertation

Irina Davidovici teaches Architecture History and Theory at the Kingston University in London. She received her PhD at the University of Cambridge and in 2009 she received the RIBA President’s Award for her dissertation.

On May 8, 2013, Irina Davidovici gives a lecture within the Capita Selecta series organized by the Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen in collaboration with VAi. She'll present her dissertation 'Forms of practice: German Swiss Architects 1980-2000' that gta Publishers recently presented as a book.

deSingel and the VAi (Flemish Architecture Institute) offer eight young architectural firms a platform on which to present their ideas on architecture, urban planning and landscape design. The architects have been commissioned to provide solutions to pressing social issues and intellectually challenging questions that may occur in the course of the design process.

SHSH studies the challenges involved in reconstructing the environments for housing and everyday life after an ecological disaster. Their ideas are being presented in the exhibition Invisible needs of life. Yuriage town renaissance.

MIES VAN DER ROHE 1:1 MODELL GOLFCLUBHAUS

Robbrecht & Daem Architects are building a temporary summer pavilion in Krefeld (Germany), based on a competition design by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe from 1930, that was never carried out.

Christiane Lange, art historian and curator for ProjektMIK, invited Robbrecht & Daem Architects to design an objet d’architecture on the basis of the unpublished historical sketches of the project. The drawings of the clubhouse for a golf course in the gently rolling countryside around the former industrial city of Krefeld were found in the Mies van der Rohe Archive (MoMA) in New York. The 84 by 87 metre installation will be built primarily in wood. It will be a life-size model revealing the essence of Mies’s architecture through its abstraction.

At the occasion of this exhibition the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAi) invites curator Christiane Lange and architect Paul Robbrecht to give a lecture on this project in Antwerp in deSingel on 14 May 2013.

Medium: images of the mid-size city

OASE 89 is dedicated to the image of the mid-size city. It also focuses on the typically European condition characterized by its vast number of small and mid-size cities.

The mid-size city generally gets very little attention in the discussion on city and urbanity. While the mid-size city did not inspire the politics, it did proof to be a popular place for living and settling. While the metropolitan city is a place for modern urban experiences, the small to mid-size city absorbs modernity and takes on a familiar and confidence ... aspect. The mid-size city has evolved from a centre into a network absorbing the opportunities and problems of the urban society.

OASE 89 will be presented at the University of Ghent, Belgium on April 25, 2013.

The Centre Pompidou in Paris acquires and exhibits work by Neutelings Riedijk Architects

Last year the Musée national d'art moderne at the Centre Pompidou acquired models and drawings of two major works by Neutelings Riedijk Architects: the Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum and the project for a Hotel at the Porte de La Villette in Paris. The models are now part of the permanent architectural collection of the Museum and are on display as a part of the exhibition 'Colour in the City', on until 3 September 2013.

Henry van de Velde (1863-1957) trained as a painter, but developed further as an architect, interior designer, designer, teacher and arts adviser.
He left an impressive oeuvre and built up an international career, boasting a great number of creations in Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands and France.

Among his best-known buildings are the Bloemenwerf villa in Ukkel, various Art Nouveau residences in Weimar, the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo and the modernist Boekentoren at the University of Ghent. He was one of the originators of the school of art that gave rise to the Bauhaus and founded the Ter Kameren school of art in Brussels.

In his furniture, silverware, porcelain, jewellery, book bindings and other creations, he proved more able than anyone else to combine practical utility with elegant sturdiness, thereby gaining international renown.

In 2013, the 150th anniversary of his birth is the occasion for a programme of activities both in Belgium and abroad.

The exhibition "Vers de nouveaux logements sociaux" opened in 2009 and is now being extended. The updated exhibition is on show in Cité Chaillot, Paris (F). Housing is an essential question in today's urban planning. How can we still be innovative in a domain that has such limited possibilities as a consequence of standards and rules? How can we surpass the logic and banality of economy to find solutions that inspire new experiments? This second version of an exhibition on the newest developments in social housing in France culminates in the re-design of a flat in Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation in Marseille (F).

Born, 1974, Kanagawa, Japan, Junya Ishigami lives and works in Tokyo. Graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts, MFA in Architecture in 2000. After joining Kazuyo Sejima & Associates, established junya.ishigami+associates in 2004. Awards include, Architectural Institute of Japan Prize 2009 (Kanagawa Institute of Technology, KAIT Workshop), Golden Lion award in part of the 12th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia (2010).

Architecture like a cloud, like a horizon, like a wood, like a landscape, like water. To Junya Ishigami these are not metaphors. He draws inspiration from the way nature appears to man and aspires to an architecture that floats, that is infinite, light, that flows, is transparent, dissolves and has hardly any substance. It is not the logic of the design, the spatial theory or the structural principle of a building that should stand out. Ishigami wants his buildings to appeal through their new spatiality and environmental richness. He seeks out the limits of the possible - both human and technical - and calls this 'making a new reality'. It is a quest for the pure and essential in architecture. In the profound and varied world of architecture he operates with an endless sense of wonder.

The European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe have announced the five finalists who will compete for the 2013 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award.

The Market Hall, Ghent by Robbrecht en Daem architecten / MJosé Van Hee architects is amongst these five and the only Belgian nominee to make it to the finals. A total of 335 works in 37 European countries were nominated for the award. An expert jury drew up the final shortlist. The overall winner of the Prize, as well as the 'special mention' award for best emerging architect, will be announced in May 2013. Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth: "The European Commission and Mies van der Rohe Foundation are committed to supporting the sector, which makes a significant contribution to the economy and job creation, as well as being a creator of beauty and a force for cohesion for our society." In 2011 MDMA-Martine De Maeseneer Architects were shortlisted with Bronks Youth theater in Brussels and in 2003 Xaveer De Geyter Architecten was a finalist with the Chassé Park Appartements in Breda.

The architecture Flanders produces is enjoying increased international attention. Architects from Flanders and Brussels participate in prestigious global architectural events and are invited to present their work. This international recognition reflects the significant work of a number of Flemish practices who have contributed to the emergence of a vigorous culture of design and research.

Since the 1990s, this dynamic process, which is also the result of the Flemish government's enlightened architectural policy, has been recorded in a series of Architectural Yearbooks, which have been published biennially by the Flemish Architectural Institute (VAi).

On the occasion of the Interiors Biennale in Kortrijk, the VAi and its partners are proud to present to an international audience the tenth edition in this series, which has been renamed as the Architectural Review Flanders: Radical Commonplaces. European Architecture from Flanders.
In the present publication an editorial board of architects, critics and scholars from Flanders and Europe reflect on the development of new concepts for housing and habitation in one of Europe’s most densely populated regions, on urban renewal projects and infrastructures and on the profound cultural ambition that is reflected in a significant number of public and private buildings across Flanders. Radical Commonplaces is both a critical reflection on the state of architecture in this European region and a celebration of the remarkable achievement of architects, urbanists and interior architects in shaping the everyday environment of our cities and landscapes.

The editorial team for Architectural Review Flanders No. 10 comprises Ilse Degerickx, Maarten Delbeke, Stefan Devoldere, Aglaée Degros, Elke Hoornaert, Christian Kieckens, André Loeckx/Els Vervloesem, Dirk Somers, Axel Sowa, Ellis Woodman and Christoph Grafe. It includes contributions by the editors and by Guy Chatel, Christophe van Gerrewey and Pieter t’Jonck.
