Spirits of Internationalism shows art from four European museums and two artists’ archives from the period 1956 – 1986. This dynamic period of technological developments and new international relations and tensions, also changed the place where and the way in which art was made and presented. Spirits of Internationalism shows how artists positioned themselves in different ways in a period when international and regional elements increasingly merged together. The exhibition breaks down the black-and-white image of the closed East and the open West by showing familiar and less familiar artworks in surprising constellations. The exhibition includes works by Alain Arias-Misson, Stuart Brisley, James Lee Byars, Luc Deleu, Lili Dujourie, Esther Ferrer, Gego, Jef Geys, Tomislav Gotovac, Grup de Treball, Tibor Hajas, Julius Koller, Fina Miralles, Francois Morellet, Antonio Muntadas, OHO, Panamarenko, Henk Peeters, Jan Schoonhoven, Mladen Stilinović, Toon Tersas and Paul De Vree, amongst others.
The exibition takes place simultaneously on two locations: M HKA Antwerp and Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven. The opening in Antwerp takes place on Thursday 19 January, in the Van Abbemuseum on Saturday 21 January. The exhibition continues until 29 April 2012.
